SINGAPORE -- Of the 192 independent sovereign States in the world today, the United States has diplomatic relations with all but 5.

US Relations

The United States has diplomatic relations with 187 nations in the world -- all 192 independent states in the world except the following five:

  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Korea, North
  • United States (a state cannot have diplomatic relations with itself)

East Timor

On May 20, 2002, East Timor became the 192nd independent state, as recognized by the United States and most other states, and its application for membership in the UN is pending.

United States

Of course a state cannot have diplomatic relations with itself, so the U.S. has diplomatic relations with all but 4 other independent sovereign states.
